5 Songs on Poverty, Hope, and Change.

What? You thought social justice issues like poverty were only spoken?

NOPE. It’s also sung.

1) Michael Jackson – Man in the Mirror (1987)

An iconic song by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson that speaks on CHANGE!

The lyrics tell listeners to change yourself, your thinking, to change how you approach a problem, how you see a problem.

I’m Gonna Make A Change

As I, Turn Up The Collar On My
Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin’ My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street,
With Not Enough To Eat
Who Am I, To Be Blind?

Change starts with YOU. EACH INDIVIDUAL HAS POWER.

2) John Lennon – Imagine (1971)

A classic song of hope that speaks on imagining an idyllic or perfect world where there is no violence, no borders, no greed, etc. The song is sung to hope that one day, the world will be able to stand together as one.

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

The first step to a perfect world is to acknowledge that our world right now needs some work – and WE can start doing that work needed!

3) Sara Bareilles – Brave (2013)

Be Brave. That’s the message of this song. Speak out. The lyrics encourage the idea that every single person has POWER, the ability to be someone great!

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

Let your opinion out, be heard, and MAKE A CHANGE!

4) Justin Bieber – Pray (2011)

Yes. Justin Bieber. Back in 2011, he released a song titled Pray. The music video featured scenes of poverty, ailment, and children – he sang of hope and wanting a change.

I just can’t sleep tonight.
Knowing that things ain’t right.
It’s in the papers, it’s on the TV, it’s everywhere that I go.
Children are crying.
Soldiers are dying.
Some people don’t have a home.

Hey, can you tell me how I can make a change?

He might be shrouded in controversy and mystery now, but there was truth in these lyrics.

5) High School Musical – We’re All In This Together (2006)

High School Musical? That show with the singing teens, the love triangle, Zac Efron, and Vanessa Hudgens? YEP.

This song promotes the value of groups and teams! Even though every person has POWER, together we’re INVINCIBLE.

Everyone is special in their own way
We make each other strong (each other strong)
We’re not the same
We’re different in a good way
Together’s where we belong

We’re all in this together

Change starts with you, but ends in teamwork!

As always, Zatanna says netsil ot eseht emosewa sgnos!
